Dave's
Project Page
This page is to
show some of my woodworking projects. Most have been made using some power
tools, although I now try to do most of my projects using hand tools -
this allows me to enjoy my time in the workshop. Power tools can do the
job more quickly but I prefer the peace and quiet allowed when using
hand-tools. I collect old wood-working tools. Following is a sample of
some of the things that I have made :-
Huntboard. This is the first large project that I attempted. It is
made out of black walnut, trimmed with red oak. The pictures do not really
do this justice as it really does look nice using this combination of
woods. The finish is poly-urinate and has stood up to 4 kids and all kinds
of abuse over the past 4 years or so.
Governor
Winthrop Desk. Made from solid mahogany
with brass fittings. This was my second project and was quite ambitious -
this was also pre hand tools and I used the Leigh dovetail jig for all of
the dovetails on this piece. I have the plans to complete the top and will
get around to finishing it off one
day.
Morris Chair. Made from QS white
oak. The picture does not do justice to the ray-flecks of the QS oak. The
oak was 'fumed' with ammonia and finished off using the Sam Maloof finish
(poly/tung oil). I intended to have the chair sprung upholstered with
leather covers - I was quoted $750 for this so I ended up with foam
cushions upholstered in this stripey crap (picked by SWMBO). I got the
plan for this from FW's 'Tables and
Chairs'.
Drum.
This is made from lacewood with a pine bottom. These drums are relatively
easy to make and really impress the recipients (I usually give them to the
children of relatives and friends as Xmas presents). They do not have to
be built to a musical scale and the kids have a great time playing them as
they can get some good sounding tunes out of
them.
Headboard. I made this for
my daughter's bed. The frame is cherry and the panel is birch plywood. The
finish is 1 coat of BLO, a couple of coats of tung oil and then polished
with Antiquewax.
Casket. I received a book of casket
plans for Xmas, and made this one. It is made from pine and uses biscuit
joinery. I'm all set now for when I get called
upstairs!
